Morong church

Tips and I went on a daytrip to Cainta, Rizal to a 400 year old church. When we got there we caught a traditional funeral procession complete with marching band, hearse and a throng of people. Then we explored the church itself, where a small baptism was going on. As we were leaving, Julio, the caretaker offered to take us to the Bell Tower, which was high atop the church tower. The tower was very old, and the stairwell was almost a complete vertical spiral. Young Julio was skipping his way up to the tower while I dragged behind, almost out of breath by the time we got to the top. I think it might have been a 5 story hike, straight up. It was worth it, though, cause we saw the old bell, dated about 1600s. The townspeople don't really know how the bell got to the top, and Julio told us the church itself was built entirely by the hands of Filipino workers, indentured by the Spanish colonizers. He didn't know too much more about the history of the church but we greatly appreciated the special treatment!

This is the funeral procession about to leave the church grounds.

the stairwell up the tower. it was very narrow, barely enough to fit one person at a time and very steep

tips and I in the bell tower
the old bell tower - there were smaller bells around the big bell. each small bell was rung for a specific occasion, like a wedding, baptism, funeral, or mass services.
tips went all the way up to the top and took this picture of me down below.

after our church trip, we had lunch in taytay then had halo halo at Manila Peninsula which was supposed to be one of the best. It comes close, except the price is a little high. It was quite creamy though, and we had fun with it!
